Descrizione

Può raggiungere una lunghezza standard massima di 27,5 cm e un peso di 560 g. Assomiglia agli altri membri del genere Semaprochilodus, dove la maggior parte delle specie sono argentate con pinne rosso-arancio e una coda striata. L'adulto S. insignis non ha le macchie scure sul fianco che si possono vedere nello S. taeniurus adulto, ma entrambe le specie hanno queste macchie da giovani.

Diffusione

È originario delle parti centrali e occidentali del bacino amazzonico. È migratorio , si sposta in grandi gruppi nei fiumi di acque bianche per deporre le uova , quindi ritorna nei fiumi di acque nere e limpide , nonché nelle foreste allagate.
